Lightning32-BTT (NxBTT32)

The Lightning32-BTT is a rack mountable 32-channel Front End unit dedicated to Blade Tip Timing applications. The unit features 28x Laser Diode (CW) & Photodiode channels together with 4x Voltage input channels (for speeds etc).

The unit can be used as a streaming device (at up to 10MHz per channel) for customers with sufficient host capability to handle up to 640MB/s, or more practically it can support sophisticated mechanisms to detect blade passings and output timing information to 1ns precision.

All Lightning units include HGL’s standard interface connections presented on the Hardware Overview page. This means that all Lightning units can connect with and operate with any other HGL Modular Front-Ends.

Lightning32-BTT is presented in a 4U Milled Aluminium Hard Anodised Chassis and is ideal for relatively harsh Environmental locations including on / near Vehicle applications.

Features

28 Optical Channels

Lightning32-BTT supports 28 Optical channels which include matched wavelength laser and photo diodes (637nm standard others are available).

Laser power is controllable from 0 to 100mW in 0.1mW steps

4 Voltage Channels

Lightning32-BTT supports 4 general purpose Voltage input channels primarily intended for supporting Tacho (speed) signals.

The standard model supports voltages to a maximum of +/-10V, other ranges (to +/-200V) can be supported on request

Laser Safety

Lightning32-BTT conforms to IEC80825 and includes a variety of laser safety interlocks, laser safety labelling and additionally LED indicators for laser power (per group of 4 lasers).

Multiple Synchronizing Types

Lightning32-BTT natively supports IRIG A/B, IEEE-1588 (PTPv2) and HGL LVDS for precise synchronisation to < 20nS (PTP) resolution across multiple systems.

Simultaneous Sampling

Lightning32-BTT supports individual 10MHz SAR ADCs per channel synchronized to better than 1ns across all channels within the unit.

Flexible Sample Rates

Lightning32-BTT allows multiple sample rates from 250kHz to 10MHz to be chosen for each channel for streaming operation.

For BTT operation the sample rate is fixed by firmware to 10MHz to provide the best precision.

94dB Dynamic Range

Lightning32-BTT utilises instrumentation grade SAR 16-bit ADCs across the range. These provide up to 94.3dB Dynamic Range.

Flexible Power

All Lightning models support DC power from 9 to 36V (automotive ranges) and PoE to 802.3bt (100W) standard.

AC power supplies are supported through a range of external adaptors

Environmentally Sealed

Lightning32-BTT has been designed to be used in environmentally challenging environments and has been tested to a number of DO160G standards (see below)

Rugged

In addition to the environmental sealing, the Lightning32-BTT are intended for use in relatively harsh vibration environments in test cells close to test vehicles and even on test vehicles.

The unit has been tested to withstand vibration to 15g RMS continuous sine wave or random.

Conduction Cooled

Lightning32-BTT is conduction cooled through innovative internal design and materials.

The unit can operate accurately from -55 to +80C. Laser operating temperature ranges are less tolerant and usually mean that for BTT operations a range of -20C to +50C is normal, this depends on laser diode choice

Buffered Analogue Outputs

Lightning32-BTT provides a buffered analogue output of each input channel (Optical and Voltage) which can be used for monitoring or for passing to external systems.

The signals output are sourced post-conditioning at the same point as the ADCs.

Environmental Certifications

The Lightning32-BTT has been tested to (and passed) the DO160 and MIL-STD-810H stnadards defined below.
