Lightning10-BTT (Preliminary)

Lightning10-BTT is a set of modular Front End modules dedicated to Blade Tip Timing applications. Conceptually the Lightning10-BTT is similar to the larger Lightning32-BTT unit but with fewer channels in a more compact form factor. The modules also use LEMO M-series connectors to provide better performance within high-vibration environments (design intent is DO160G Cat R Curve W) whilst retaining the same performance for the other environmental tests as the Lightning32-BTT.

Master Module - This module features:
- 8x Optical inputs (Laser + Photodiode)
- 2x Voltage inputs (for tachos)
- 8x Digital I/O lines
- 1x External Voltage Inset Connector
- 1x Physical Interlock
- 2x 10Gigabit Ethernet with PoE++ and IEEE1588 support
- 8x Laser Power Indicator LEDS

Slave Module - This module features:
- 10x Optical inputs (Laser + Photodiode)
- 1x External Voltage Inset Connector
- 1x Physical Interlock
- 2x 10Gigabit Ethernet with PoE++ and IEEE1588 support
- 10x Laser Power Indicator LEDS

These two modules can operate independently or daisy-chained with a maximum of 3 modules (Master + 2 Slaves usually) from a single PoE++ source. However, for situations where external PoE++ power is not available and / or external IEEE1588 is not available HGL has also designed a Base module which provides ancillary services.

Base Module - This module features
- DC Power (12-36V)
- 1x external 10Gigabit Ethernet Port
- 1x GPS antenna port (Option for 1x IRIG A/B port)
- 3x Lightning10-BTT Ethernet Ports with PoE++ and IEEE1588 support
- Optional internal solid state storage (up to 512GBytes)

The Lightning10-BTT modules are presented in a compact Milled Aluminium Hard Anodised Chassis (241mm x 89mm x 89mm) and is ideal for harsh Environmental locations including on / near Vehicle applications.

Features

8/10 Optical Channels

Lightning10-BTT supports 8 or 10 Optical channels (Master or Slave) which include matched wavelength laser and photo diodes (637nm standard others are available).

Laser power is controllable from 0 to 100mW in 0.1mW steps

0/2 Voltage Channels

Lightning10-BTT supports 2 general purpose Voltage input channels on the master module, primarily intended for supporting Tacho (speed) signals.

The standard model supports voltages to a maximum of +/-10V, other ranges (to +/-200V) can be supported on request

Laser Safety

Lightning10-BTT conforms to IEC80825 and includes a variety of laser safety interlocks, laser safety labelling and additionally LED indicators for laser power per laser.

Multiple Synchronizing Types

Lightning10-BTT natively supports IRIG A/B (Base), IEEE-1588 (PTPv2) and GPS (Base) for precise synchronisation to < 20nS (PTP) resolution across multiple systems.

Simultaneous Sampling

Lightning10-BTT supports individual 10MHz SAR ADCs per channel synchronized to better than 1ns across all channels within the unit.

Flexible Sample Rates

Lightning10-BTT allows multiple sample rates from 250kHz to 10MHz to be chosen for each channel for streaming operation.

For BTT operation the sample rate is fixed by firmware to 10MHz to provide the best precision.

94dB Dynamic Range

Lightning10-BTT utilises instrumentation grade SAR 16-bit ADCs across the range. These provide up to 94.3dB Dynamic Range.

Flexible Power

the Master / Slave modules are PoE++ only.

The Base module supports DC (12-36V) only, but AC power supplies are supported through a range of external adaptors

Environmentally Sealed

Lightning10-BTT has been designed to be used in environmentally challenging environments and has been tested to a number of DO160G standards (see below)

Rugged

In addition to the environmental sealing, the Lightning10-BTT are intended for use in harsh vibration environments in test cells close to test vehicles and even on test vehicles.

The unit has been designed to operate in DO160G Cat R Curve W environments (or equivalent MIL-STD-810H conditions).

Conduction Cooled

Lightning10-BTT is conduction cooled through innovative internal design and materials.

The unit can operate accurately from -55 to +80C. Laser operating temperature ranges are less tolerant and usually mean that for BTT operations a range of -20C to +50C is normal, this depends on laser diode choice

Environmental Certifications

The Lightning10-BTT will be tested to the DO160 and MIL-STD-810H stnadards defined below.
